About Me

I am a research economist, currently Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of the Universidad de San Andrés (UdeSA) in Buenos Aires. My fields of interests are economic history and development, mainly on topics related to economic growth in the long run, welfare and standards of living, institutional dynamics, crime and conflict, demographic change, and market integration. My work has been published in different international journals, including the Journal of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Economic Growth, Population Studies, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Journal of Development Economics.

I began my training, in fact, at UdeSA, where I obtained a BA (1997) and MA (1998) in Economics, followed by an MPhil in Development Studies (1999) at Darwin College, University of Cambridge. In 2000 I joined the Banco Central de la República Argentina where I was a Senior Analyst at the Research Department. In 2002 I resumed my graduate studies at the University of Oxford, obtaining the MPhil in Economics (2004) at Worcester College, and then the DPhil in Economics (2008) at Nuffield College. At Oxford I had the luck to interact with one of the best social and economic history groups in the world, and to be supervised by one of greatest scholars -and nicest persons- in the profession, Bob Allen

Following my doctoral degree, I moved to Milan, where joined Università Bocconi. There I lectured for over a decade, while doing research at the Centro Dondena and the Innocenzo Gasparini Institute for Economic Research (IGIER). In 2018 I came back to UdeSA, my alma mater, where I continue doing research while teaching both at undergraduate and graduate level. Since 2019 I also have been directing the Master in Economics, one of the leading graduate programs in Latin America. Over the years I occasionally engaged in other professional activities, mainly as a consultant, to international organisations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (Washington, DC), and NGOs such as the Observatorio de Desarrollo Regional y Promoción Social AC (Mexico).
